Roaccutane is the trade name under which the pharmaceutical company Roche markets the substance isotretinoin. It is chemically related to retinol (vitamin A) and retinoic acid, but unlike them it poses more potential dangers to human health. Roaccutane is produced in the form of oral tablets and is considered perhaps the most effective medication for the treatment of moderate to severe forms of acne. Bodybuilders are fans of this preparation for the same reason - it helps them fight off one of the most common side effects of anabolic and androgenic steroid use - acne.

Roaccutane is indeed a very powerful medication that gives excellent results even in some of the most severe cases of clinical acne (acne vulgaris). During a medical study in Kuwait, 133 patients with acne were subjected to 20 weeks of isotretinoin therapy. At the end of the trial period, 127 of them experienced a partial or complete clearing of their acne, which statistically summarized means a 95% success rate. Because of the excellent long-lasting effects achieved with its treatment, Roaccutane is in high demand throughout pharmaceutical markets worldwide. The typical way of using isotretinoin involves taking daily doses of 0.5 to 1 mg per kg of body weight. Example: if you weigh 70 kg, you should take 35 - 70 mg per day. In very severe forms of acne the dose can be increased to 2 mg per kg. This medication must be taken twice a day, preferably in the morning and evening. Isotretinoin should also not be taken on an empty stomach, as food (and especially high-fat products) greatly aids absorption of the preparation.

Unfortunately, the effectiveness of this medication comes at a price. Because it is extremely potent, Roaccutane has quite a few potential side effects, for which it is also often labeled as a controversial drug. The most striking cases that have been recorded due to its use are severe depressions. Women who are planning a pregnancy should under no circumstances use this product. There are medical reports that the substance isotretinoin also has some hepatotoxicity, which can lead to inflammatory bowel disease, pancreatitis, elevated triglyceride values and hearing impairment.
